How Do Acoustic Panels Work?

What Is Sound Absorption?

Sound Absorption is designed to reduce the echo and reverberation of a room to make the space quieter and give the sound within the room much more clarity.

Echo is sound energy repeating around a room. Sound energy will bounce off smooth hard surfaces much in the same way a rubber ball bounces off the ground. Although the direction of the sound changes, the echo sounds the same as the original sound. This creates an amplifying effect and makes everything seem very loud, often making conversation in these kind of spaces hard to understand. You might have encountered this whilst sat in a restaurant where you can barely hear what the person opposite you is saying.

Sound absorption can be used in any situation where reverberation is a problem. Examples of this include noisy offices, village halls, museums, sports halls, classrooms, meeting rooms and music studios.

Sound absorption will reduce the reverberation in any type of space to create a quieter, clearer atmosphere.

Why Use Sound Absorption

Sound absorption panels are filled with soft, absorbing materials, which absorb sound and trap the sound inside. So when a sound wave hits the panel it stays there and doesn’t bounce back into the room.

What Is The Difference Between Sound Absorption And Soundproofing?

Soundproofing is trying to stop sound from getting into, or out of a room. A good example would be stopping sound from noisy neighbours getting into your home, or stopping the sound in your room from getting out and disturbing your neighbours.

Sound absorption on the other hand is improving the internal sound quality and acoustics within a room, by reducing the amount of echo and reverberation in the room.

Sound Absorption FAQs

  • How many panels will I need?

The number of panels, rafts or baffles needed is based on the dimensions of the room, the surface material and reverberation time. The quantity of panels to bring the reverberation time down is then calculated accordingly.

  • Does cheap egg box foam work for sound absorption?

    • Compared to our Class A panels, these aren’t even good enough to be classified
    • This means a high percentage of the sound that hits them still bounces back into the room
    • Even just to get a reasonable improvement in acoustics you’d need to cover pretty much the entire room in them
    • The quality can often be poor and the thickness and shape can vary dramatically between panels within the same pack!
    • Aesthetically they don’t look particularly appealing, compared to ProSound Panels that look very smart and being bespoke, can be made to any size, colour and can have images and logos printed on them
  • Can I attach paper to the panels to use as a message board?

Yes, the ProSound Acoustic Wall Panels can be used as a pin board.

  • What is the difference between sound absorption and soundproofing?

Soundproofing is trying to stop sound from getting into, or out of a room. E.g. blocking the sound from noisy neighbours. Sound absorption is making the acoustics within a room sound better, by reducing the amount of echo and reverberation.

  • How does sound absorption work?

The soft materials used in ProSound Sound Absorption Wall Panels, Ceiling Rafts and Baffles are all designed to absorb sound energy. This means when a sound wave hits the panel it stays there and doesn't bounce back into the room.
