How to soundproof around noisy pipework

If you have exposed pipework such as waste downpipes or radiator pipes within your home, this can cause a noisy disturbance as well as look unsightly within your room. As an example, if your water pressure is set too high as it moves into your home, it can cause your pipes to vibrate. This vibration often makes a humming sound in your pipes.

Soundproofing pipes

The best way to soundproof these types of pipework would be to firstly wrap a layer of our 5mm thick self-adhesive FlexiSound 5 around the external face of the pipes, this will not only add a high level of mass to reduce the level of airborne sound transmission within the room but will also help to absorb the resonance of the structure of the pipe, therefore dampening down the vibrations at the source of where the vibrational energy is created.

Once the FlexiSound 5 layer has been applied, you will need to create a timber frame or bulkhead around the pipework, completely concealing the area, this empty space is then to be filled with our highly dense acoustic mineral wool to minimise the level of echoing and amplification, also known as the drum effect, within the hollow boxed area.

To add a substantial amount of mass, and to finish off the timber boxed area, we would suggest fixing two layers of acoustic plasterboard onto the face of the timber frameworkor SoundBoard 4 for a higher performance. Please ensure that this is as well sealed as possible with our acoustic sealant gun (filling any joints), to alleviate having any potential weak points where sound energy can easily leak through.
